Hi. I came across your blog and I decided I’d shoot you an email. I’m a new homeowner and I’m wanting to make sure that I keep on top of regular maintenance around the house. At this point I guess my main question relates to changing my HVAC air filters. Some websites say I should change then on a monthly basis while others say I don’t need to change them unless they look dirty. Can you tell me what’s correct? On one hand, I want to stay on top of things because I want the system to last as long as possible, but on the other hand, if I don’t’ need to pay for a new filter every month, that will save me some money.
Thanks in advance for your advice. – Susan C.
Hi Susan, thank you for your email! You are somewhat correct in that you may not need to swap out your filters every 30 days. Although you should check your filter on a monthly basis, you don’t need to replace it until it starts to look dirty. If you pull your filter out and hold it up to the light, you should be able to see through it. If you can’t, it’s time to replace it.
The filters have a very important job because they remove things like dust, pet dander, mold spores, pollen, bacteria and other types of contaminants from the air that’s inside of your home.
When the filters are dirty, a few things will happen. First, they won’t be able to do their intended job. Second, your HVAC’s motor will need to work a lot harder to push air through the filters, because the airflow will be obstructed. Third, this is going to strain your motor and fourth, this will lead to an increase in your monthly heating bill.
If this goes on for too long you run the risk of a system failure.
If you have a manual transmission car, you understand the importance of changing gears as your speed increases. If you try to drive your car at 70 miles per hour, in second gear, your car’s engine isn’t going to be happy.
If you run your HVAC at full blast, but your air filters are covered a pile of dust, dander and other types of contaminants, your HVAC motor isn’t going to be happy.
