If your furnace isn’t working as well as it should be, you may be wondering how to get it back online fast. Sure, there are a bunch of HVAC companies listed online, but you may be wondering if there’s a way to get your system fixed both fast and cheap.
If you’re thinking about hopping on Craigslist, we’re here to tell you that this is not a great idea.
Licensed, insured and experienced
The average HVAC system cost spans between $3,000 and $6,000 depending on the make and model of what you have. Suffice to say, when it comes time to hire someone to repair your furnace, you’ll want to make sure you hire someone who knows what they’re doing.
That, and if you’ve been following our blog, you may have read the post about the landlord that hired a handyman (as opposed to a HVAC technician) to look at his tenant’s furnace, and how the handyman inadvertently did something that messed up the system’s ventilation, which ultimately caused a massive indoor carbon monoxide leak.
When you work with an unlicensed, uninsured contractor, you’re not only putting your family at risk, you’re putting the overall health of your HVAC system at risk. If they cause additional damage, there’s no guarantee they’ll fix what they broke.
If the damage is significant and you decide you want to take them to small claims court to recover damages, you’ll probably have a hard time having them served. Lastly, if an unlicensed contractor is injured while on your property, you could find yourself on the receiving end of a lawsuit, and you may be ordered to pay for their medical bills, lost wages and in some cases, pain and suffering.
Like we said, hiring an unlicensed contractor to do any sort of work at your home is a terrible idea. Yes, you may save a few bucks on the front end of a transaction, but you could find yourself in a place where you need to pay a lot more on the back end.
How to hire a reputable company
When you start your search, make sure the company has a website and a social media presence. Do they have a Yelp page? Do they have online reviews? Online reviews are a great way to gauge the professionalism and experience of a service provider.
When you start calling around, ask the company if they can provide you with a list of local references. Prior clients are also an invaluable source of information. Lastly, ask the person you’re talking to if the company is licensed and insured, and if they have a brick-and-mortar address.
If everything sounds good and the references check out, you’ve likely found a reputable, reliable company to help you with your HVAC repair.
